Nags Head, since the time of its discovery in 1830’s, has enjoyed its reputation as a resort town, a place for plantation owners to escape the oppressive heat of their homes. Nags Head is characterized by the rambling seaside cottages that dot its shores and the accent of its residents, which add to the local flavor. Though the downtown area of Nags Head has plenty of hotels and beach stores, adding to the vacation feel that permeates the town, the beaches themselves are the main attraction here. Visitors must be careful, because the winds and currents can be very intense, and lifeguards aren’t always on duty. Jockey’s Ridge State Park is just outside of town, and is a popular spot for hang gliding, as is Kitty Hawk, the area where the Wright Brothers took their, and America’s, first flight.
